ARE CARROTS BAD FOR HORSES?
Carrots used to be the emblematic treats for horses, but nowadays they have been getting the topic of a huge debate.
They are from the group of vegetables known as 'roots' ad have a high water content, so the nutrient content is 'diluted'. For every five carrots you feed, four are actually water! Although they are relatively high in sugar: a 128 g carrot contains just 6 g of sugar and 1.8 g of a starch. Carrots are a good source of water (80%) so are useful for a horse on a dry diet or a stabled horse compound feed.
Carrots are also a rich source of betacarotenes (vitamin A precursors), and minerals, B vitamins, vitamin C and K.
So, for a healthy horse whose quantity of sugar doesn't have to be severely restricted, carrots are not banned! They may be a healthy treat for reward during training.
Moreover the debate is open, and there are several contrasting opinions, which one is the best? Probably this is up to each horse who has its own characteristics and necessities.
Consulting your vet, and asking for more informations might be a good idea!
