BIRTH AID KIT

Horses usually give birth at nighttime (22 p.m. - 6 a.m.), and they usually lie, but they can also stand. The mare needs to be in a safe, clean and quiet place: a paddock or a big box (with a bedding made of straw and not of shavings!) can be suitable places.
If she doesn't have any complication, she may not need the vet to help her, but it is essential to have someone expert monitoring the birth, just to avoid problems. If you are not an expert, it is better to bring the mare in a specific structure, where she can be controlled and help, just in case she needs.
Anyway it is good to have an equipped aid kit at the stables:

  • vet's phone number
  •  delicate cleaning soap to wash the udder and the genital area before the delivery
  • calcium test (to find out the quantity of calcium in the mare's milk)
  • bandage for mare's  tail
  • container for the colostrum, cotton gauze for the filtration (in order to remove dirt), clean plastic bottles to freeze the colostrum
  • clock (it is important to time and take note of every passage of the delivery in order to find out any complication to it)
  • thermometer, scissors, flashlight
  • obstetric sterile gloves and sterile lubricant gel
  • latex gloves
  • clean towels to stimulate the foal's breathing if necessary, and dry him out
  • disinfectant (clorexidina) to disinfect the navel
  • feeding bottle for lambs with latex teat (those for human newborns are not appropriate and those for calfs are too big)
  • fleet enemas to give to the foal in his first hours of life in order to stimulate the expulsion of the meconium
  • plastic bag for conserving the placenta when expelled
